Midwifery Founded on Reproductive Justice

The focus of Freedom River Midwifery is to provide clients with individualized care to ensure they feel seen and understood during their pregnancy. Staysha has built her practice on the foundation of Reproductive Justice.

SisterSong defines Reproductive Justice as the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.

Staysha believes that everything that is of importance to you is of equal importance to her. Whether its the ups-and-downs of your week, your relationship with your partner or an experience you had within your community, she understands all of these things cumulate to effect your overall health and wellbeing. You no longer have to accept the bare minimum from the medical industrial complex.

Lift Every Voice.

To be in the care of a midwife who focuses on Reproductive Justice is to experience specialized care tailored to the unique needs of the family. Staysha focuses on the individual within the context of their community, providing the type of culturally focused care that pregnant people need most.

  • Personalized care: Midwives provide individualized care, taking the time to get to know their clients and providing support based on their unique needs and preferences.

  • Continuity of Care: Midwives provide care throughout the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period. This provides consistency and familiarity for the mother and family, as well as continuity of care from one stage to another.

  • Empowerment: Midwives promote informed decision-making and provide education and support to birthers and their families. This helps birthers feel more empowered and confident in their ability to make choices that are right for them.

  • Holistic Approach: Midwives provide care that is focused on the whole person, not just the medical aspects of pregnancy and birth. They may provide support in areas such as nutrition, exercise, and emotional wellbeing.

  • Lower intervention rates: Studies have shown that midwife-led care is associated with lower rates of interventions, such as inductions, epidurals, and cesarean sections. Midwives work to promote natural birth when possible, while also providing medical support when needed.

  • Better outcomes: Research has shown that midwife-led care is associated with better outcomes, including lower rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, and infant mortality.

  • Cost-effective: Midwife-led care is often more cost-effective than traditional obstetric care, as midwives tend to use fewer interventions.

Overall, the midwife model of care provides many benefits for mothers/birthing people and their families. It is an approach to care that is focused on the individual, and that aims to promote positive outcomes for both mother and baby.
